Sewer works in Harkaway from early 2023

South East Water has been working with the City of Casey, under their Domestic Wastewater Management Plan, to identify areas where household waste from failing septic systems is polluting groundwater and the environment. Harkaway has been identified as an area where this is occurring.

To remove this risk for the community, we're extending the sewerage network to the township of Harkaway, to reduce the use of existing onsite septic tanks on smaller blocks (under 0.4 hectares).

Sorry we didn't include the referenced 'Pressure Sewer Fact Sheet' in our recent letter to the area. Please see link below under 'Documents' to download and view the fact sheet.

What we're doing

Over the last few months, we've been investigating the feasibility of extending the sewerage network to the township of Harkaway, to reduce the use of existing onsite septic tanks on smaller blocks (under 0.4 hectares).

We have now finished our investigations, which have informed our decision to proceed with construction of this project.

We’ve also engaged with customers on larger blocks on the periphery of the scheme to determine their interest having the sewer extend to their properties enabling them to connect. The map below shows the final alignment of the new sewer pipes to be installed.

Currently, we are tendering the project to appoint a contractor to deliver the installation of the pressure sewer system on our behalf. Once a contactor has been appointed, we’ll get in touch prior to construction commencing, to advise on impacts and connection costs. At this stage we anticipate works to commence in early 2023.

Don't miss these details

Instead of a traditional gravity sewer, we’ll be installing a pressure sewer system, which requires smaller pipes to be installed, normally via horizontal directional drilling. This methodology minimises construction impacts on the community and the environment.

Wastewater from households is collected in a pump and tank unit (installed on the property and connected into the sewer network) prior to being pumped into the sewer mains in the street and taken away under pressure to the water recycling plant for treatment. Please see the fact sheet below for more information.

Properties under 0.4 hectares and within the backlog boundary are eligible to connect under the scheme. Any properties over 0.4 hectares or vacant blocks, don’t qualify for connection under the scheme, however can still connect if the property fronts the new sewer main. We'll be in touch with more information about connections once we've constructed the sewer.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, we have changed our engagement practice to ensure our crews can maintain physical distancing. Please see COVID-19 update letter below for more information.
